Passo Mendola represents the junction between Trentino and South Tyrol/Caldaro and it is located at the end of a pass road with 15 hairpin bends. This is where the mountain station of Mendola funicular is located and where you can enjoy strolling around or having a cup of Sunday afternoon coffee.
Passo Mendola is also a meeting point for those who would like to hike to Roen mountain, Penegal or go trekking in Val di Non as well as those who have their summer residence in the surroundings. However, especially the bikers and cyclists the pass at 1,364 m asl is a popular meeting point, as the road to the mountain pass represents a real challenge and is a special experience.
Passo Mendola is located between the Penegal and Roen mountains and this is also where you can hear different dialects, as it is also border of German and Italian speaking population. The road to Passo Mendola is open all year round and has been established at the end of the 19th century and has continually been adapted to respective traffic situations. The funicular to the Mendola has been inaugurated in 1903, in the times before bus rides to the pass were very popular with tourists.
One upon a time Passo Mendola was also a health resort for aristocratic families. Also the Austro-Hungarian Kaiser Franz Josef made a visit to the pass and historic buildings of those times still provide a special flair to the locality. The residence in which the huge ballroom was placed has been renovated and offers now apartments. However, lovely summer residences in the forest represent the most beautiful scenery of Passo Mendola. This is where inhabitants of the Oltradige region love to relax and take a brake from everyday life.
