Have a look at the various types of wines and grapes growing in Appiano and surroundings.
About 20 different types of grapes are cultivated throughout South Tyrol. Many farmers still cultivate ancient types, whereas younger farmers also try to cultivate some new varieties. And their courage is rewarded, as some of the new, high-quality wines are very popular with connoisseurs.
The quality and processing of grapes and later on of the wines is monitored. Most of the vine growing areas are subject to safeguarding provisions and use the seal of approval D.O.C. (”Denominazione di Origine Controllata”), that is to say Controlled Denomination of Origin.
The different white wines and their grape vines are called:
> Pinot Bianco,
> Moscato giallo
> Müller Thurgau
> Grüner Veltliner
The red wines and their grapevines are:
> Schiava gentile (Trollinger)
> different other types of “Schiava”
> Pinot Nero
> Moscato Rosa
> “Kalterersee Auslese” (Schiava)
> St. Magdalener
> Südtiroler Merlot Rosé
How do these types of wine taste?
The white wines are always to the fore. Their fresh, dry or mild taste is very popular, due to the fact that many people have a marked preference for light white or golden wines. However, also red wines are very popular, especially appreciated for to their heavy and strong character, but not everyone likes their earthy taste. However, also the light Schiava wines proved popular with gourmets.
