Abbey church Mariengarten

The Cisterian nuns are responsible for the monastery church, the abbey and the monastery chapel.

In 1883 the order from Baden-Baden purchased the Bloshof farm of the 12th century. From now on the nuns started living in this place and taught the children of the surroundings. Still today the Mariengarten school is in good odour and is well-attended.

Under the Prioress Charitas Thoma, the monastery church was constructed. Planned by the architect Ferdinand Mugenast, the master builder was Ignaz Vaja, both citizens of Bolzano. The church was consecrated in 1904. The high altar, the confessional box as well as the statues, but also the choir stalls and the way of the cross were wood-carved by an artist of Valgardena, whose name was Ferdinand Perathoner. The crucifix in the church is the oldest element of the building. In 1935 it was newly painted.

Today in the monastery church of the Mariengarten, every day there is a Holy Mass at 6.45, on Sundays it is held at 8.30 am. And what is so particular on the Lord’s Day mass is that the nuns sing the Gregorian chants.
