From Passo Mendola to Monte Penegal

A pleasant hike from the Mendola to the Penegal mountain that is also suitable for families.

The day starts with an adventure, that is to say a ride with the Mendola cable-way, taking us from S. Antonio in Caldaro to the Passo della Mendola within 12 minutes only. Since 2009 glass cabins provide a perfect view while riding, that makes you enjoy the Oltradige region from a bird’s eye perspective. At the mountain station we follow the road straight on, towards Ruffré in Val di Non. At a parking space opposite historic hotels the trail to the Penegal starts.

With a snack, some beverages, warmer clothes and, very important, a camera, we continue on the trail number 500. The alpine scenery is really fascinating, both for us adults and the kids, 5 and 7 years old. After a while we reach the “little Penegal“, which is located at almost the same altitude of its “big brother“. This is also where we find a quiet viewpoint, making us admire the mountains of South Tyrol, the Trentino, the Valle dell’Adige and the Monte di Mezzo to the fullest. Also a table and resting benches are available, ideal for a little break. Be cautious, as the precipice is not secured in this place.

After another quarter we reach the Penegal (1,737 m), to everyone’s relief. A great view as well as a kiosk make us forget the almost two hours of walking. The Catinaccio and many other peaks of the Dolomites rise into the surroundings, while on the other side the Brenta Dolomites catch our sight. We enjoy this moment, have a cup of coffee, watch the goat family and decide to start our way back, on the same trails.
By the way: you can also reach the Mendola by car, parking spaces available.
