The huge parish church of the village of San Paolo is also called the “Dome in the Countryside”.
San Paolo is a village that belongs to the municipality of Appiano. It is also called the “historical village”, its centre can really show its face. Bays, gates and constructions in the particular architecture of the Oltradige line the roads and alleys in the village. In Christmas time, this scenery is venue for a Christmas crib exhibition, and every two year the village fair of S. Paolo is staged right here.
Nevertheless, the historical highlight of this village is its colossal church. It was commissioned by the aristocrats and constructed in the years between 1484 and 1533. In the 15th century, S. Paolo used to be the chief village of the municipality. Still today, the village spreads this atmosphere, as many “uptown” people used to live in this place, who wanted to give expression to their wealth and prosperity by building a colossal church.
In fact, the size of this building was the reason for the long construction period, as it took from the mid 15th century to 1533 to have the building completed. The steeple was completed in the mid 17th century. For this reason it also bears some Gothic and partly Baroque elements. In the end, the goal of the clients has been achieved: from that point of time on, everyone knew where the powerful people of this area lived.
There are by the way also guided tours in the “Dome in the Countryside”. For further information please call +39 0471 662191.
