The seemingly dead woman of Maderneid

This tragic story sounds very creepy…it’s rather unexpected when dead suddenly get out of the coffin again, isn’t it?

In the Thalegg residence in Maderneid, once a woman lived with her family. She died unexpectedly and was buried in the cemetery of San Paolo.

The gravedigger had seen that the woman was buried with a very valuable ring. He decided to go to the tomb that night, open it and take the ring from the dead. That’s what he did. With a lantern he went down into the tomb, opened the coffin and wanted to take the ring from the dead woman. It was not so easy, so he gathered all his strength.

This woke the woman, who had only been seemingly dead. The man was terrified, but helped the woman out of the coffin so that she could go home again.

At home she rang the bell and her husband asked her who was there. The woman answered in a weak voice: “the woman of the house”. It couldn’t be her, the man said sadly, because the woman of the house had been buried yesterday.

But finally he recognized his wife, was happy about her return and opened the door for her. The two lived together for another seven years, the woman gave birth to another child. But then she really died and was buried again in the family crypt.
