The golden skittles of Appiano Castle

The castle ruin of Appiano is at the centre of this legend.

In former times, again and again shepherd boys came to Appiano Castle to herd their sheep. Once, they were too curious and entered the castle where they found an old iron door. They opened it with all their might, entered a dark corridor and found a second iron door to lock. A large vault was now in front of them. Along the wall, they discovered a golden skittles.

Immediately the boys started to play. Suddenly the walls cracked loudly if everything was about to break down, the floor trembled and the children were terrified. Straight away they tried to find the exit. But as it was already late at night, they could not find it anymore.

But if the boys had taken the skittles, they would have come straight to the exit. They had dropped it in shock and therefore had to stay in the corridor until the next day, when they rang the bell in San Paolo. The doors opened again and the terrified boys could escape.

But from then on the skittles disappeared.
