The Monte Ganda is a mountain ridge that stretches at the foot of the Mendola mountain ridge in Appiano. Covered by forests, it hardly attracts attention, but it is a particularly popular hiking and residential area. The Monte Ganda merges into the area of Appiano Monte, which is a beautiful area for promenading. Also mountain bike tours across the forest are very popular.
The hill of the Monte Ganda is by the way the result of a landslide of the latest Ice Age, to which also the term “Gand” refers, that means debris. This is also where you can find the famous Ice Holes, which have emerged a very long time ago. Warm air enters the spaces between the quart porphyry rocks, which is cooled down in the interior. As a consequence, in the surroundings of these holes you can feel the cool air, making alpine vegetation flourish. A unique phenomenon that attracts visitors from all over.
