Large lake of Monticolo

At the large lake of Monticolo, there is the lido with its sand beach and swimming pools.

The large lake of Monticolo is located at 492 m asl, covers an area of 17.8 herctares and boasts a maximum depth of 11.5 m. If you surround the lake on the trail in the forest, which by the way is really romantic, you overcome a distance of 2.2 km. At the lakeside, there is also the lido, which is an alternative to the emerald green lake, offering two swimming pools and a beach for adults and kids.

There are also several places that exert a particular fascination. Now and then you can see jumping one of the sun-bathers into the lake from the few rocks that surround the waters. Another area is rather isolated and seems to be really popular for romantic summer evenings. The rest of the lakeside is lined by the circular walking trail that also makes it possible to take a bath in several places.

An eye-catcher at the western lakeside of the larger lake of Monticolo is the so-called “Scheeschloessl”, that is to say a pretty castle-like building, located directly at the tree-covered lakeside. Constructed by the aristocrat Josef Zastrow from Germany in 1888, it seems like taken from a fairytale. It has been modelled basing on the Mediaeval style and boasts staircase-shaped gables and windows with pointed arches. Max Sparer (Termeno) and many other painters often came to this place in order to draw one’s inspiration from this beautiful spot of land. From 1902 the castle has been owned by the municipality of Appiano.
