Lake Caldaro

Even if it is not located in Appiano, it has an important role to play: Lake Caldaro is the warmest lake for bathing in the Alps.

The Lake of Caldaro is the warmest lake for bathing in the Alps, which already at mid May makes the swimming season get started for all those who cannot wait, with an average water temperature of about 19 degrees C. In high summer season the water temperatures rise up to particularly warm 28 degrees. The lake, located at 216 m asl, is only 10 km away from Appiano.

South Tyrol’s largest natural lake for bathing originates from the ancient Adige riverbed. It is 1.8 km long and 0.9 km wide (155 hectares), boasting an average depth of 4 m. Moreover the lake provides ideal conditions for any kind of water sports. In summertime, every day at about 1 pm, there is a refreshing southerly called “Ora”, coming from Lake Garda. This breeze attracts all surfers and sailors into the waters. From 2006, there has also been a new lido at the north western lakeside, built in the modern construction style of the 20th century.

In the southern area of the lake, however, there is a biotope which also represents the habitat, refuge and wintering ground for numerous animals and plants. A total of 14 information panels make you experience the diversity of flora and fauna at the lake and provide interesting information for those who are eager for knowledge. Our recommendation: combine a walk round the lake (7.5 km) with a visit to Castelvecchio, the castle that towers above the lake. From this place you enjoy a breathtaking view on the surroundings.
