Monticolo Forest

In the heart of the Monticolo Forest in Appiano, a nature reserve and place of power, there are the two Monticolo Lakes

The 100 hectares of the Monticolo Forest (Montiggler Wald, in German - Bosco di Monticolo, in Italian), South Tyrol’s largest recreation area, are under natural protection. In this large mixed forest with its spruces, chestnuts, lime trees and sweet cherries on the Monte di Mezzo mountain there are the Spring Valley as well as the two Monticolo Lakes, the big and the small one. Together with some other wet habitats (Langmoos or Purzelmoos), they have their origin in the Ice Age.

The forest is controlled considering the aspects of the PEFC seal, which stands for a responsible, sustainable forestry as well as a controlled processing of the natural product of wood. Appiano (Eppan) has set its sights on preserving this forest for the oncoming generations.

For outdoor lovers, the Monticolo Forest is a true paradise: Mountain bikers can enjoy themselves on the single trails, and also swimmers, hikers and riders feel at ease. A popular hike, for example, leads from the upper parking space of the Big Monticolo Lake to the Small Monticolo Lake and further on to the so-called “Wilder Mann Bühel” hill at 650 m a.s.l., a prehistoric settlement as well as a panoramic point which offers a stunning view on the surroundings.
