The castle behind the trees is located just on the Mendola Road. On the right the former Tavern Matschatsch can be seen and on the left the large parking space. From here you easily reach the small castle on foot.
It has been proved that the building belonged to a Matheis Pernstich in the 16th century who sold it to the Lords of Fuchs. In the 18th century the Franzin family was the owner of the castle, at the beginning of the 19th century the Schasser family from Caldaro. They converted the property into a summer villa.
In 1887 the castle belonged to Baron di Pauli. It was again renovated and extended. The family used the castle as a summer residence. It was not until 1953 that the municipality of Appiano came into possession of Matschatsch Castle and extended it again.
The Oltradige architectural style with its round arches, halls and sandstone borders is well visible at the building. On the south side there is a small half-round chapel with dome and lantern. It underlines once again the romantic view and location of the castle.
From here there are plenty of hiking possibilities: either you climb up the Passo Mendola or you walk along the Appiano High Route towards Appiano, Monte and Predonico. The third option is simply to stay close to the castle. Forests and meadows offer not only children the opportunity to discover pure nature.
