The night before our excursion is spent on a mountain hut at Passo della Mendola, in other words the adventure already starts the day before. Early in the morning, after breakfast and with mountain equipment, we start our tour to the Roen, via the fixed rope route. The sun is not too hot today, which is an advantage in the steep and challenging passages on the way up. By walking across meadows and forests, we reach the Rif. Mezzavia, but it is too early for a break. Our next hiking destination is the Rif. Oltradige.
The alpine landscape is really fascinating. There are some cows grazing on the meadows at the foot of the Roen, making this scene even more idyllic. The view is amazing and would be even more impressive with better weather conditions. At the Rif. Romeno, located underneath the hiking trail to the Roen, we take the left path, after 15 minutes we reach the Rif. Oltradige, where we make a stop. This is where the hiking trail to the Roen starts. One of us decides to do this fixed rope route, which is considered not too difficult.
Partially the fixed rope route is very steep, you need to be sure-footed and free from dizziness. In order to guarantee your safety, there are fixed ropes. A helmet is recommendable, not only with kids, as other hikers can cause rocks to fall down. At the end of the fixed rope route, only some hundred metres need to be overcome in order to reach the Roen. At the summit we can enjoy an impressive view on the Oltradige and the Bassa Atesina to Bolzano. After a break we start our way back, the hiking trail to the Romeno mountain hut is wide and re-creative. At the Rif. Mezzavia, after 5 hours of walking, we really feel our body’s reaction.
Please note: if you start from the Rif. Mendola, you can either walk from Caldaro/S. Antonio via the Pranzoll trail or take the first cable-car to the Mendola at 7.03 am.
Please note: If you would like to do this walk, inform yourselves about the current hiking conditions on the spot.
