Appiano is a valley that is full of surprises. One of the most impressive hiking destinations are the ice holes.
Did you know that Appiano also boasts high alpine vegetation? If you don’t believe it, you are invited to head for the natural phenomenon of the ice holes located close to Monte Ganda. Already the name of this place reveals that it must be a rather cool place. Exactly for this reason in its surroundings, plants that normally grow in much higher areas flourish. And to make it clear: the area between Appiano and Caldaro is located at 500 m asl.
The porphyry debris has emerged subsequent to a rockfall. In this way caves and holes were formed, which are entered by the warmer air of outside, that is cooled down and sinks. This is where the temperature is about 0 to 9 degrees C. The area which the alpine plants grow is rather small, that is to say about 200 m long and 50 m wide. Generally, about 600 species of plants are considered to thrive in the surroundings of this special natural phenomenon.
The natural phenomenon of the ice holes is located at the foot of the Mendola mountain ridge and can be combined both with pleasantly easy and challenging walks.
