“I am what I do!”, that’s what the worldwide famous alpinist Reinhold Messner says about himself.
Reinhold Messner was born on 17th September 1944 in Funes (South Tyrol). When he was 5 years old, he went mountaineering for the first time with his father. They scaled a mountain of more than 3000 metres! After his studies in Padova (Italy) he was working as a teacher for a short period of time. Today Reinhold Messner is very popular thanks to his numoerous journeys and expeditions.
So far the alpinist has scaled numerous mountain peaks. Moreover he was the first human being to scale different mountains. He conquered all 14 eight thousand metre peaks as well as the “Seven Summits”, without using oxygen bottles. His journeys have always been a challenge for body and spirit, for example the unaccompanied transition of the Arctic and Greeland, Tibet, the Gobi desert and Takla Makan.
Today Reinhold Messner lives in Merano with his family. He spends the summer period on Juval Castle, which was renovated in 1983. As writer he established his reputation as author of different books about the alpine world, about his expeditions and the mysterious “Yeti”.
After a short political interlude as representative in the EU parliament, Messner dedicated himself to his great mountain museum project, the MMM (Messner Mountain Museum).
