Messner Mountain Museum

The Messner Mountain Museum, the largest mountain museum, could be described as cultural memorial.

In the year 2003 Messner began to develop an concept for a mountain museum in the alpine area. This project includes 5 sites. Four have already been implemented - on the Monte Rite in Cadore (near Cortina d’Ampezzo), in Solda, on Juval Castle in the Val Venosta, which is also Messner’s summer residence, as well as the main site which is Firmiano Castle near Frangarto (Appiano). Each of these museums is dedicated to another theme.

The MMM Dolomites Museum on the Monte Rite in Cadore, situated in the south of Cortina, is open to the public from June to October. In the restored fort from the first world war, paintings, sculptures, fossiles as well as memorabilia of the popular alpinist illustrate the story of the Dolomites. What is particularly striking is the impressive location of the museum. The 360° view on the Marmolata, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and on the Dolomites enchants all museum visitors!

Snow, ice and glaciers are in the centre of attention in the Ortles MMM in Solda at the foot of the Ortles massif. The subterraneous museum is open to the public from mid-December to Easter and from mid-May to mid-October. It provides an insight into the alpine history, narrations of soldiers, alpinists and researchers and illustrates their success as well as their eventual miscarriage.

On the MMM Juval Castle near Naturno in the Val Venosta, visitors can admire Messner’s unique Tibetica collection from Palm Sunday to the end of June and from September to the beginning of November. Messner took over and renovated this castle in 1983 - today it is also his summer residence.

For further information on the main museum site of the MMMs, which is the Firmian mountain museum on Firmiano Castle, visit the corresponding section on this site.
