MMM Firmian 2011

MMM Firmian

On the edge of Appiano, there is the MMM Firmiano, a mountain museum in which the alpinist Reinhold Messner exhibits his large collection.

MMM Firmian is the core of the mountain museums and is located in Firmiano Castle above Frangarto - Appiano. Messner calls it “the enchanted mountain”. While touring the temporary exhibitions and the six towers of this museum, the visitor gets an insight into the world of mountains. At the same time you can enjoy the view fom the castle.

Reinhold Messner and the South Tyrolean architect Werner Tscholl succeeded in combining art, religion and statements and thus created a unique piece of art. However, the castle has been preserved in its historical form. The changes only include a wooden construction that can easily be disassembled. The visitor experiences a real journey of discovery. The main difference to most other museums is that the visitor can move wherever he wants to and does not have to follow a certain parcours. Moreover great importance is attached to Firmiano castle, as the call for autonomy and protection of minorities originated in this place.
