Museum for Medieval Culture of Living

The Folklore Museum in Appiano, located in the ancient walls of Castel Moos, is dedicated to the medieval culture of living

In 1983, the Museum for Medieval Culture of Living was inaugurated in the Moos-Schulthaus complex in Appiano Monte (Eppan Berg). It is an idyllic area with vineyards and many castles and old residences. The late Romanesque residential tower of Castel Moos was built by the Lords of Firmiano in the first years of the 14th century and was extended several times: Today it houses the museum which has been managed since 2013 by the South Tyrolean Castle Institute.

Inside the museum there are some real rarities. Besides the rooms themselves - an intact medieval kitchen, a Gothic parlour and valuable ancient furniture - there are also artworks and old frescoes. The collection shows paintings of Tyrolean artists of the first half of the 20th century - the frescoes, however, were laid open during restoration works in the 20th century. They depict i.a. a rare presentation of the Egyptian legend of the War of Cats and Mice (around 1410), several hunting scenes and a miracle tree with women picking phalli. A visit to the Museum for Medieval Culture of Living can be wonderfully combined with a hike in the Appiano castle region.
